Carvoeiro is the lively fishing
village and
beach resort near Rocha Brava. The village has banks, a post office,
pharmacies and shops selling everything from beach mats to clothes,
fresh produce, wine and handmade pottery. The many bars and restaurants
provide an amazing choice of places to eat and drink. Rocha Brava
provides free transport to the town throughout the day.
Just east of Rocha Brava is Benagil, a delightful fishing cove
with beach, bar and restaurants serving fresh fish. Here you can
hire a boat for trips to local caves and watch the fishermen bring
in their daily catch. Beyond is
Praia Marinhas with its spectacular cliffs rising high above a
glorious stretch of golden sand.
Although a car is not essential, it is worthwhile if you want to
explore the many lovely coastal villages and beaches as well as
other places of interest.
West of Carvoeiro is the village of Ferragudo, with
numerous beaches and cafes. The main beach at Ferragudo is within
the harbour walls of Portimao, making it safe for children to paddle
in the sea. Here you can also indulge
in a wide range of watersports.
Just north of Carvoeiro is Lagoa, the wine capital of The Algarve
and within ten minutes drive is Silves, the former Moorish capital
of The Algarve with an amazing castle complete with Persian gardens,
a museum, colourful market, shops and restaurants.
